Andreas Blank (born in 1976 in Ansbach) studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe under Prof. Klingelhöller, and obtained his Master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in London. He was a scholarship holder of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and following his studies, he received the Land Securities Award, became a finalist for the New Sensation Award by the Saatchi Gallery, and was honored with the Conran Award in London. Blank is the 2024 Loth Sculpture Prize donated by L-Bank.
Andreas Blank creates a mixture of abstract and representational yet conceptual sculptures. His materials are as outstading as his creative process. Blank is continoulsy looking for different sorts of stone, which then are handle by the artist on diverse complex processes to create pieces that may resemble everyday objects.
The artist combines both abstract and representational, as well as conceptual practices in his sculptures. Across various continents of the world, he searches for rare stones, meticulously crafts them through elaborate processes, and assembles them into stylized or deceptively realistic everyday objects.
Andreas Blank interrogates the visible and transposes traditional references and values onto the mundane and contemporary. He creates sculptures from marble, alabaster, sandstone, and limestone, which appear realistic but are liberated from their function and transformed into pure objects in the discourse of image and likeness. While historically stone sculptures primarily served political representation or religious devotion, Andreas Blank’s work now questions a (post)modern nihilism.
