Ryo Kato-
Kurz vor Zwölf

About the exhibition

The artist, originally from Japan and currently based in Berlin, will present his first exhibition in Regensburg. Ryo Kato, born in Niimi, Okayama Prefecture, devotes his art to the connection between nature and humanity. His works serve as a medium to raise awareness about the current state of the environment and to call for sustainable protection.

Kato creates a captivating visual dynamism through the artistic unrest on his canvases. His style is characterized by a successful fusion of figurative and abstract elements. The masterful use of color blending and scraping technique subtly reveals realistic motifs.

At the age of 14, with a promising career in professional Go, Ryo Kato was inspired by the French Impressionists. He began his artistic journey at the age of 17 when he moved to Paris. In 2001, he started his studies at the Berlin University of the Arts under the guidance of Wolfgang Petrick. In 2005, he switched to Daniel Richter’s class as a master student and successfully completed his master’s degree in 2006.

In 2012, he won first place at the prestigious Ishi Prize in Japan. This was followed by the inclusion of one of his works in the collection of the Okayama Prefecture Museum in 2013. In 2015, the museum acquired another significant artwork by the artist. In 2021, he was awarded the “Initial” special scholarship by the Academy of Arts Berlin, followed by receiving the “NEUSTART KULTUR” scholarships from the KUNSTFONDS foundation in 2022.

We are pleased to inform you that the artist will be present in person.

“For me, art takes on the role of a mirror, reflecting society and allowing people to reflect upon themselves.” – Ryo Kato
