Alexander Timofeev was born in 1971 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He pursued his artistic education at the Art School in St. Petersburg from 1982 to 1989, followed by further studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in the same city from 1989 to 1994. Later, he continued his artistic development at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg from 1995 to 1997 under the guidance of Professor Johannes Grützke.
Alexander Timofeev belongs to a generation of young Russian artists who bring the painted image back to the forefront of their work. Following the execution of oil painting in the manner of the old masters, the artist combines quality, virtuosity, and depth in his work at the highest level. Regardless of stylistic dogmas, the traditional technique of oil painting experiences a sort of renaissance in Timofeev’s work. In terms of content, he reaches “a new synthesis […] between reality and magic, because his incredibly realistically painted figures, which seem to come from a strange play, are citizens of two worlds and have entered into a recognizable, identifiable setting like scattered angels from paradise.” (Dr. Helmut Orpel, 2003) Despite all the objectivity in his work, the artist manages to create a connection between present and past through mysterious and symbolic loading of the images, which in its manner almost seems spiritual.
